How to do Maintenance of Fin-Fan Cooler




Some of Maintenance Procedure Arrangements Before start work


1. You must have an authorized work permit.

2. You must have proper tools for working.

3. You should always use proper PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment ) for your safety.

4. Today we are talking about maintenance of Fin-Fan and this work always executed on height so you  must have to use Safety Harness as a falling protection.

5. As per requirement always use scaffolding.

6. If any fluid or pressure present in equipment then drain the fluid and release the pressure.

7. And the most important thing is to provide blinding as per blind list for the positive isolation of an equipment.

Steps for Maintenance Procedure

1. Remove the plugs using torque wrench. ( Do not use hammer ring spanners and other hammering methods to remove the plugs because that will damage the thread )

2. Remove the old gasket rings without damaging the gasket area.

3.  Now offer to inspection team for preliminary inspection.

4. Fix hydro jet water collection trays.

5. Now hydro jet the tubes.

6. After hydro jetting air clean the tubes.

7. Offer once again for Inspection. 

8. If ok, clean the gasket area good without damage.

9. Check the thread for any damage.

10. Clean the plugs good and check the threads.

11. Fix the plug with new gasket.

12. Tight plugs by torque wrench to required value.

13. Now fill the water and Hydro Test.

14. Identify leaks through Tubes/Plugs.

15. If no leak offer for inspection to the team.

16. Now drain the water and de-Blind.

17. Finally make good housekeeping and work safely.

Questios no1- What are the types of gaskets used in the fin-fan cooler plugs and material of construction?

Ans- Ring type gaskets are used and material of construction is soft iron, aluminium, stainless steel  and alloy.

Questio no2- What are the size of plugs used in fin-fan cooler?

Ans- 1 1/8 (28.5 mm) is the normal size. But 1 ¼(31.75=32 mm) and 1 3/8 (34.9=36 mm) plugs are also used.

In this article today, we will talk about Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger, and we will know what are the types of heat exchanger used in our refinery i.e. oil and gas field, so first we will talk about the definition of heat exchanger. What is an exchanger called?

A heat exchanger is an equipment which is built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another i.e. A heat exchanger is an instrument that is designed in such a way that the transfer of the heat takes place from one medium to another, the media may be separated by a solid wall so that they never mix.

After the introduction, we now know a little bit about where the heat exchanger is used, the heat exchanger is used for the Space heating,  Refrigeration, Air conditioning, Power plant, Chemical plant, Petrochemical plant, Natural gas processing and for Sewage treatment It is also used for.

So let's talk a little bit about what type of heat exchanger you have. You don't have to be confused at all about the types of  heat exchanger. Mainly, there are four types of heat exchanger we use.

 1. Shell and Tube Type Heat Exchanger -  


 Shell and tube type heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger that is most commonly used in oil and gas field refineries and it is most used for high pressure applications.

 2. Plate Type Heat Exchanger -


A plate type of heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger in which metal plates are being used for the transfer of heat between two fluids. This features a major advantage over a standard device therein the fluids are exposed to a way larger area because the fluids are opened up over the plates.

 3. Air cooled Type Heat Exchanger -


The most commonly used heat exchanger after any shell and tube type heat exchanger inside any oil and gas or refinery is the air cooled i.e. fan-fan type heat exchangerThese units are used to cool and /or condense process streams with ambient air cooling medium instead of water.

 4. Double pipe Type Heat Exchanger -


A double pipe heat exchanger may be a very basic arrangement where two fluids can exchange heat without coming in touch with each other . It consists of two pipes. The smaller diameter pipe is places inside the pipe like concentric circle. The two fluids flows through the inner pipe and thru the annular area. Usually the warmer fluid flows through the inner pipe.

This kind of warmth exchanger is typically used where very less heat transfer area is required or where the pressure drop across the heat exchanger should be kept minimum.
